LOVE – Mind, Body & Soul

The vast magnificence of Love is a power that has never been fully understood or explained. It is an idea, a feeling, an ethos, a concept - and it is not tangible. Even though it is one of the most powerful emotions on the planet – it is not quantifiable. Not in actual scientific terms where a chemist could put your ‘love’ in his test tube and weigh and measure the love you feel for your partner, child, parents or anyone. You own your love. And that is why, even the person you profess to love has no idea of how much you love them. You own your love. It is your sorrow, your joy, your suffering and your delirium. It is your dragon to fly. It is your unicorn to ride.

Where does this love come from? Where does love exist in our body? Is it in the cells, tissues, muscles, nerves, organs, brain, skin? Where is it that I feel the impending loss of my daughter as she leaves home to start her own young beautiful life? Each morning I wake up and a different part of me is hurting. This morning was an ache in my chest, yesterday was my lower back; the day before that was muscular weakness all over my body, and so it goes.  Am I just manifesting all these crazy symptoms because my mind is subconsciously telling me that I am untying trillions of knots that bind me to my baby girl? Each knot that is made of cells, tissue, blood and memory; it hurts even to approach the mammoth task of getting my hands bloody and starting the process of unraveling these ties that bind … my chest begins to hurt and my eyes begin to water.

Nothing prepared me for being a mother; I have just fumbled my way through this complicated labyrinth successfully and many times unsuccessfully by sheer luck. And more than the primal instinct of keeping my little cubs safe, I have been confounded, soaked, seared and stunned by the magnitude of the Love I feel for these creature that I birthed. There is nothing that I would not do to keep my babies safe and healthy. Personally for me something solidified when I became a mother, it’s a role that has let me explore the depth, height and width of this emotion being discussed – Love.

I have read enough Khalil Gibran and Rumi to be even romantic about the concept of my babies flying out of the nest. In the same spirit it is my unending love that wants my little girl to go out into the world and find her place, her identity. How do I quantify my limitless love for her? I want her to learn the ways of the world, explore her potential and become the woman I know lives in that young person. The woman I know I helped shape. I know she will be kind, savvy and magnificent. How do I explain to her that her she carries me along with her - that unconscious turn of her head, the thoughtful gestures she makes, and her smile - I am always there within her.

For me it just reinforces that I am going to wake up each morning and feel a vacuum in my home, mind and body. The physical emptiness of the presence of my lovely young girl with her long limbs sprawled about the home, or those middle of the night raids for a snack, walking into my room and regaling me with stories about her day, shopping with me for my make-up and clothes, advising me on ‘mom, ummm…maybe the other shoes’, correcting my use of current teen slang, reaching over and silently fixing the glitch on my laptop, or introducing me to my Bitemoji Avatar… just her presence that gives me my identity as her Mama - to date my favorite.

And as she goes off to join this world of bigotry and natural disasters, I wish I could protect her from every negative experience.  However, both she and I have to learn. We have to understand that only out of change will there be growth; every new experience - good or bad - is going to reshape ideals; adversity will build character and failure will motivate; creating and maintaining new friendships will enrich; loneliness will enable the search within; curiosity will break boundaries - anything she wants to achieve is possible; there will be times of extreme joy and freedom, and there will be times of and sadness and isolation - both for her and me. And that is life. And this letting go is Love.

Born and bought up in India, Priya has been entrenched in the practice, study, and teaching of classical Hatha and Kriya yoga for the past 30 years. What The Heck Are Doshas? 
Disease doesn’t just suddenly appear. After all, having good health for the most part is the result of developing a healthy lifestyle. Similarly, disease can be likened to a seed. If the seed is cultivated by unhealthy habits then the seed will soon manifest into a full-blown disease. According to Ayurveda, illness is often the result of a long process which can actually be detected during early stages and therefore can often be prevented. Also, from a holistic perspective, it’s important to determine the causative factors and resolve them rather than just suppressing the symptoms through medications. In order to do so, we must first investigate into possible causes from which diseases originate from and finally help to establish balance using basic principles using the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda.

Ayurvedic Body Types - Vata, Pitta & Kapha. 

 

The Doshas

Each of the three doshas are present throughout the body. They govern our physiology and all activities of the body, mind, and emotions. An important principle to consider regarding the cause of disease from an Ayurvedic perspective is “like increases like”.

“Like Increases Like”
This principle of ‘like increases like’ clearly explains that if one of your doshas [vata, pitta, or kapha] becomes imbalanced then it’s likely that you will experience symptoms which directly reflect a particular quality belonging to the imbalanced dosha.

Vata Dosha
Movement, motion and flow are always occurring in all parts of our body at every moment. This movement is thought to be under the guidance of vata dosha. Vata dosha is characterized by qualities such as:

  • Dry
  • Light
  • Cold
  • Rough
  • Mobile

 

Like Increases Like ...
Vata dosha may become aggravated by similar qualities. For example, eating large quantities of dry food, dry nuts, cold food, or even certain prolonged activities with excess movements such as jogging, running, and rushing about may lead to vata imbalances within the body. Vata imbalances can manifest as irregular digestion, anxiety and worry, insomnia, and various other conditions.

Balancing Vata Dosha:
Therefore, in order to balance vata dosha, you may want to consider the following:

  • eat more warm, brothy and easily digestible foods
  • eat at regular times to help promote balance in life
  • avoid stimulating foods [i.e. coffee, tea, tobacco and spicy foods]
  • avoid foods which are dry, cold, and light
  • consider eating more ‘healthy oils’ [ghee, flax, hemp, sesame]

 

Pitta Dosha
Pitta dosha is involved with metabolism at every level of the body. For example, all transformations at the organ, tissue, and cellular level are all governed by the principle of pitta dosha. Pitta dosha is characterized by qualities such as:

  • Hot
  • Sharp
  • Light
  • Liquid
  • Oily

 

Like Increases Like ...
Pitta dosha may become aggravated by similar qualities as well. For example, eating hot and spicy food, fermented food, citrus fruit, and working in hot humid conditions can all increase and provoke pitta dosha. Pitta imbalances in the body may manifest as acidity, irritability, inflammation, fever, nausea and various other conditions.

Balancing Pitta Dosha:
Therefore, in order to balance pitta dosha, you may want to consider the following:
– Eat foods which are cool and refreshing
– Avoid foods which are sour, salty, pungent and spicy
– Dairy milk, butter, and ghee are often beneficial for pacifying pitta
– Drink more water and consider aloe vera to help cool down pitta

Kapha Dosha
Every cell, tissue, and organ system are involved with providing structure to the body. The process of creating structure involves building, maintenance, and repair – which are all under the principle of kapha dosha. Kapha dosha is characterized by qualities such as:

  • heavy
  • dull
  • cool
  • oily

 

Like Increases Like ...
Kapha dosha may become aggravated by similar qualities as well. For example, kapha types are vulnerable to cold, moist, slow and heavy characteristics which may manifest as a slow and sluggish digestion, weight gain, congestion, edema, and poor circulation.

Balancing Kapha Dosha:
Therefore, in order to balance kapha dosha, you may want to consider the following:

  • Wake up early, be active and consider exercise daily

  • Avoid cold drinks and instead consider warm and spicy food and hot drinks
  • Eat fresh raw vegetables to help balance the oily nature of kapha
  • Consider drinking hot water mixed with small amounts of honey

"According to Ayurveda, there is no herb or medicine 
equivalent to turmeric in the treatment of Prameha (Diabetes)."

According to the American Diabetes Association, the total number of people with diabetes is projected to rise from 171 million in 2000 to 366 million in 2030. In other words, this is a very real concern. The science of Ayurveda dates back thousands of years and has explained diabetes as “prameha” which is a collection of symptoms due to various underlying imbalances rather than just a single disease. For example, prameha which means ‘profuse urination’ is categorized into twenty different types according to Ayurveda. It’s interesting to note that the ancient scholars also described diabetes mellitus [“madhumeha”] many thousands of years ago. Madhumeha is made up of two words, madhu and meha - which implies sweet urine. Similarly, the ancient Greeks called this condition diabetes mellitus due to the passing of sweet urine; i.e. glycosuria.

The ancient Ayurvedic scholars have grouped Madhumeda (Diabetes Mellitus) under one among the 20 pramehas. For simplicity, prameha can be grossly divided into three main types:

1. kaphaja prameha [10 types]
2. pittaja prameha [6 types]
3. vataja prameha [4 types]

Note:
Prameha is obviously a vast topic and this post is simply to introduce basic ideas on how to address diabetes from a natural and holistic approach.

The Root Cause ...
Kaphaja prameha reflects, often, the initial and underlying cause of diabetes. In this category there are 10 types. According to the classic Ayurvedic texts,  diabetes [“prameha”] begins with the derangement of kapha which spreads throughout the body and mixes with fat [“meda”] creating a mixture of properties similar to kapha; i.e. mucous. When kapha is mixed with fat and passes into the urinary system, it soon interferes with the elimination of urine which eventually effects the quality of urine. One of the underlying causes of disease, according to Ayurveda, is the clogging of channels and the accumulation of waste. Hence, therefore, kaphaja prameha commonly reflects the initial and underlying cause of diabetes.

Causes of Diabetes
The causes of diabetes have been long explained by the ancient teachings of Ayurveda. The causes include:
- lack of physical exercise [“asyasukham”]
- sedentary lifestyle [“alasya”]
- excess sleeping [“svapnasukham”]
- food & lifestyle which increase kapha [“kapha krut cha sarvam”]
- inherited/genetics [“sahaja”]
- stress [“chinta”]
- grief [“shoka”]
- fear [“bhaya”]

Traditionally, the management of diabetes is carried out with lifestyle modifiers along with appropriate herbal therapies. Herbs are selected based upon properties such as:
- tastes [“rasa”]
- properties [“gunas”]
- potency [“virya”]
- postdigestive effects [“vipaka”]
- unique action [“prabhava”]

Turmeric - The Spice Of Life
Turmeric is one of the oldest, most important spices known to humankind. Turmeric is bitter, astringent and pungent in taste, and has a heating quality. Likewise, turmeric has drying and light properties which effectively helps to eliminate kapha - the primary culprit for the manifestation of “prameha” [diabetes mellitus]. What’s of great importance is that, by taking control of the initial stage [“kaphaja prameha”] the disease process is likely to come to a halt and help to prevent the manifestation of complications with are often incurable.

It’s important to note that in Ayurveda, disease often has one or two predominant doshas that need to be balanced according to one’s constitution. Therefore, one therapy many not be applicable to all patients even though individuals share the same disease.
