1. Ginger called ‘vishvabheshaja’ - "Universal Medicine"
Ginger effectively works on digestive and respiratory systems and is therefore useful in managing cough, asthma, bronchitis, allergies and congestion. Ginger is also well known for improving digestion and helping to relieve abdominal cramps and indigestion. Ginger is also considered good for arthritic conditions and the local application of dry ginger paste is used for sinus headaches and painful joints (except burning sensation and redness).

2. Cardamom is the king of digestive stimulants.
Cardamom has well known beneficial effects on the digestive, respiratory and circulatory systems. It's thought that cardamom helps to detoxify some of the undesirable effects of caffeine in coffee. Cardamom also helps to improve digestion, helps alleviate nausea and vomiting, belching, and even effective in relieving colic. Cardamom acts as an appetizer, deodorant, digestive and has expectorant properties therefore useful in cough and asthma.

3. Basil (especially Holy Basil, Tulsi)
Basil acts mainly on the respiratory system. Basil is an effective expectorant therefore useful for productive cough. It helps to removes excess mucus from the lungs and nasal passages. Similarly, Basil is effective for colds, sinus congestion, headaches and even has antibacterial properties. Of course, Basil also helps to stimulate digestion.

4. Black pepper called Marich in Sanskrit, the name for the sun.

5. Pippali called Chapala (giving instant action).
Pippali works on the digestive, respiratory, reproductive system. It helps to improve appetite and metabolism while helping to rid the body from toxins. Pippali is useful in colic, indigestion, liver and spleen disorders (i.e. enlargement of liver). Pippali has expectorant actions and is considered beneficial in managing bronchitis, asthma, laryngitis and productive cough. It's used as a tonic in tuberculosis, works as an aphrodisiac, reduces seminal debility, and even eseful in painful labor; under the guidance of a qualified professional.

Sitopaladi - The Sweet Cough Remedy

Sitopaladi - The Sweet Cough Remedy
Sitopaladi is an ayurvedic formulation made up of five main constituents. The name Sitopaladi indicates the sweet rock candy it contains. It works primarily as an expectorant and is therefore particularly beneficial during the seasonal changes that bring a rise in colds and flus. Sitopaladi also works as an antiasthmatic, febrifuge and a diaphoretic. It is therefore useful during shortness of breath and bronchitis as it helps to clear the congestion and allows prana to flow when it is obstructed by excess mucus and sputum.

Clear Throat
Clear Throat is a fast-acting formula that cools and soothes the throat, and aids in removing impurities from the respiratory system.

Properties
Sitopaladi is a light, oily herb and has a sweet, pungent taste with a heating effect in the body. It has a sweet post digestive effect and it works especially well on the digestive and respiratory systems.

The Five Constituents:

  • Pippali (long pepper)
  • Twak (cinnamon)
  • Vamsa Lochana
  • Elae (cardamom)
  • Sitopala (rock candy)

Despite the formula containing rock candy, the remaining herbs are heating in nature and work effectively together to help break down the excess mucus and congestion in the respiratory system. As the herbs are also strong digestives they are beneficial in cases of weak digestive fire. The vamsa lochana is particularly beneficial with infected phlegm and hot fevers, working as an excellent expectorant. Pippali works as a rejuvenative to the respiratory system and cardamom and cinnamon also help break down the congestion.

Homemade Organic Herbal Cough Syrup - FitLifeTV

Ingredients: 
2 tbsp Lemon Juice
2 tbsp Marshmallow Root
2 tbsp Ginger
2 tbsp Chamomile
½ tbsp Cinnamon
½ Cup Honey
2 Pints of water

Directions: Bring the water to a boil, and add the roots and spices (all the wet ingredients.) Let it simmer until it has reduced about 40%. Then strain the water into a jar and let it COOL. Add the honey and lemon juice (after it’s cooled, we don’t want our honey to cook.)

At one time or another almost everyone has had a sore throat. A sore throat is caused by irritation and inflammation of the throat and is most commonly due to a virus and to a lesser extent by bacteria. That said, if your sore throat lasts more than a few days or if it’s accompanied by fever, nausea, or abdominal pain, see a doctor.

Therefore, gargle with 1 cup of hot water [not too hot that it burns] mixed with 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric and 1/2 teaspoon of salt.

These tasty, refreshing lozenges help remove impurities and soothe a dry, irritated throat.

"Throat Soothing Herbal Tea"
Steep 1 teaspoon of the following mixture in water for 5-10 mins.

  • cinnamon [2 parts]

Ayurvedic Home Remedies For A Dry Cough & Sore Throat

"Honey is a natural home remedy for a dry cough, as it soothes the irritated tissue lining at the back of the throat. Depending on the severity of the cough, you can take a tablespoon of honey one to three times a day."

Sore Throat + Common Cold
First and foremost, rest is the best remedy for the common cold. That said, make sure to get enough Vitamin C and there is no better source of Vitamin C than Amalaki. Amalaki is the indian gooseberry, the word “amla” means ‘sour’ and has a very high content of vitamin C.

Also consider taking 1 tablet or ½ tsp of neem at least 3x day.
After neem, mix about:
- 1/2 tsp sitopaladi
- 1 pinch pippali (or regular black pepper, if pippali not available)
- 1 tsp honey

Lick this mixture and avoid eating or drinking for at least ½ hr. You will notice a little bit of burning in your throat after you take this sitopaladi/pippali/honey mixture.
