Ayurveda's Finest: "Golden Milk"
It’s to no surprise to that turmeric has fast become a popular remedy for just about everything that ails you. Traditionally, turmeric milk has been used for conditions such as colds, congestion, headaches, and sore throats due to turmeric’s anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. What is more interesting is that Ayurveda [and other ancient systems of medicine] have used turmeric for health and wellness since for as long as historical records have existed.

Makes 2 servings 1 1/2 teaspoons powdered turmeric 1/8 teaspoon each: nutmeg, coriander, cardamom, fennel, ginger, cinnamon, Chinese 5-spice, black pepper Pinch each: cloves, sea salt 1/8 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon honey 1 teaspoon coconut oil 1 cup water 2 cups milk (any kind!) In a sauce pan, over low heat, heat 1 cup water with all spices. Once mixture is steaming hot, cover and let sit for 5 minutes or longer (even overnight, if you want a very potent flavor). After the mixture sits, whisk in milk, vanilla, honey, and coconut oil and heat to steaming hot again. Pour into two glasses and enjoy!

Important! 
Ayurveda advises not to heat honey as it is considered to be toxic; or have toxic effects.

Turmeric – Helps Purify The Blood & Acts As An Antioxidant!!
Turmeric is one of the oldest, most important spices known to humankind. Turmeric is bitter, astringent and pungent in taste, and has a heating quality. Due to its heating quality, turmeric helps to balance Kapha and Vata doshas (mind-body types), and due to its bitter taste, it helps to balance the Pitta dosha, thus making it tri-doshic.

Very Very Easy To Make! 
1. Place milk in a saucepan and cook over medium heat
2. Add turmeric [and additional spices, see below] and stir
3. Allow the milk to simmer for just a few minutes, stirring occasionally
4. Turn off heat, cover, allow the mixture to sit for several minutes to allow for greater infusion
5. Strain the milk through a strainer if fresh ingredients were used
6. Serve warm and enjoy

Want To Spice It Up? 
Turmeric is a bitter spice so if you want to spice it up and make your turmeric milk more flavorful then consider spicing it up with a pinch of this and a dash of that. Depending upon what you are attempting to target, here are several other considerations to help spice up your turmeric golden milk.

– 1 tsp of ghee which acts as a laxative to help promote bowel function
– 1 pinch of nutmeg helps promote sound sleep & is also a carminative
– 1 pinch of ginger to act as an anti-inflammatory
– 1 pinch of cinnamon and/or cardamom for delectable flavoring

Word Of Caution Regarding Honey & Ghee:
Finally, you may also want to consider adding a 1/2 tsp of honey for flavoring. However ~ a word of caution. According to Ayurveda, equal amounts of honey and ghee [based upon weight] is considered to be toxic and should generally be avoided.

"According to Ayurveda, there is no herb or medicine 
equivalent to turmeric in the treatment of Prameha (Diabetes)."

According to the American Diabetes Association, the total number of people with diabetes is projected to rise from 171 million in 2000 to 366 million in 2030. In other words, this is a very real concern. The science of Ayurveda dates back thousands of years and has explained diabetes as “prameha” which is a collection of symptoms due to various underlying imbalances rather than just a single disease. For example, prameha which means ‘profuse urination’ is categorized into twenty different types according to Ayurveda. It’s interesting to note that the ancient scholars also described diabetes mellitus [“madhumeha”] many thousands of years ago. Madhumeha is made up of two words, madhu and meha - which implies sweet urine. Similarly, the ancient Greeks called this condition diabetes mellitus due to the passing of sweet urine; i.e. glycosuria.

The ancient Ayurvedic scholars have grouped Madhumeda (Diabetes Mellitus) under one among the 20 pramehas. For simplicity, prameha can be grossly divided into three main types:

1. kaphaja prameha [10 types]
2. pittaja prameha [6 types]
3. vataja prameha [4 types]

Note:
Prameha is obviously a vast topic and this post is simply to introduce basic ideas on how to address diabetes from a natural and holistic approach.

The Root Cause ...
Kaphaja prameha reflects, often, the initial and underlying cause of diabetes. In this category there are 10 types. According to the classic Ayurvedic texts,  diabetes [“prameha”] begins with the derangement of kapha which spreads throughout the body and mixes with fat [“meda”] creating a mixture of properties similar to kapha; i.e. mucous. When kapha is mixed with fat and passes into the urinary system, it soon interferes with the elimination of urine which eventually effects the quality of urine. One of the underlying causes of disease, according to Ayurveda, is the clogging of channels and the accumulation of waste. Hence, therefore, kaphaja prameha commonly reflects the initial and underlying cause of diabetes.

Causes of Diabetes
The causes of diabetes have been long explained by the ancient teachings of Ayurveda. The causes include:
- lack of physical exercise [“asyasukham”]
- sedentary lifestyle [“alasya”]
- excess sleeping [“svapnasukham”]
- food & lifestyle which increase kapha [“kapha krut cha sarvam”]
- inherited/genetics [“sahaja”]
- stress [“chinta”]
- grief [“shoka”]
- fear [“bhaya”]

Traditionally, the management of diabetes is carried out with lifestyle modifiers along with appropriate herbal therapies. Herbs are selected based upon properties such as:

The transition between seasons welcomes a new change and this new change invites a different way of life from the old season by entering afresh into the next season. Spring is a season of growth and new potential. In fact, spring is considered the king of all seasons. Of relevance, in the Bhagavad Gita - 11th chapter, Krishna while stating his strength says, “among all the trees I am the sacred pippala [Bodhi tree] and of the season - I am Spring.” This is because spring is the season in which all of nature wakes up as the birds sing, flowers bloom, and people generally feel energized as we emerge from winter. In essence, spring is a time of growth and a time to begin a new lifestyle. However, before adapting to a new way of life, we must first appreciate the qualities of spring and adapt in accordance.

Qualities Of Spring - "Moisture"

Spring can be likened to the freshness of water from the recently melted snow of winter. Because of this, there is still much moisture in the atmosphere and kapha [which is primarily water and earth] tends to be aggravated during spring season. As a result of all this moisture, excess accumulation of kapha within the body begins to liquefy and run out of the body as many people experience “spring fever” and allergies this time of year.

It is a known fact that spring is the time of year for seasonal allergies. As the trees start to bloom and the pollen is released into the atmosphere, allergy sufferers begin their annual ritual of sniffling and sneezing. Furthermore, during spring the climate gets warmer and the heat reduces the digestive power of body. Ayurveda explains the concept of Ritucharya. In Sanskrit, the word “Ritu” means “seasons” and the word charya means “to follow a routine”. As per Ayurveda, the duration from mid-March to mid-May constitutes the Vasant Ritu or Spring season.

Do’s
The goal during spring season is to pacify kapha with foods that are light and easily digestible. Foods that are particularly bitter, pungent, and astringent as these tastes are considered kapha pacifying - or that which helps to reduce kapha.

Don’ts

It is advised to have easily digestible food which are low in calories during the spring season since the digestion power of “Agni” is diminished. Ayurveda believes that all diseases are primarily due to a faulty digestion. It is also now well understood that the gastrointestinal system is a major organ of immunity.

Honey. Honey is thought to have a “scrapping effect” and small amounts of raw honey is considered beneficial to help reduce kapha. Therefore, a good consideration for sweeteners during spring season is honey.

Herbal Teas. Since coolness and moisture are still within the atmosphere and before we fully experience the heat of summer, it’s of benefit to consider having warming teas such as ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, and clove tea during spring.

They contain quercetin, a nutrient that breaks up mucus in your head and chest while boosting your immune system.When the smell of raw onions makes your nose run and your eyes tear up, this stimulates your immune system to fight infection. Onions also contain allicin which slows down and kills a variety of viruses and bacteria. The pungency of onions increases your blood circulation and makes you sweat. This effect is helpful during cold weather to prevent infections and to sweat out a cold or flu.

1. Exercise regularly and avoid sleeping in daytime can help to prevent kapha accumulation. Ingredients
- ½ cup split mung dhal
- 3 cups water
- 1 teaspoon ghee

Directions

There are several varieties including almond, carrot, sesame and mung amongst others. Sooji Halwa is made using semolina flour and has many health benefits. It is a great source of vital minerals, nutrients and also yields high energy.

Some health benefits of Sooji:

  • Good for weight loss and diabetics as it has a low glycemic index
  • Provides energy as it is low in fat and high in carbohydrates
  • Low sodium and cholesterol levels and high levels of potassium, vitamins B and E therefore supports good heart and kidney function
  • Phosphorus and magnesium levels in sooji assist in maintenance of healthy muscles, nerves and bones
  • The calcium and zinc content is also helpful in bone health and immunity
  • During cases of fever and upset stomach, sooji can be made into rava kanji which is a light, easily digested type of porridge. It is also very nourishing.

 

Ayurvedic Sooji (semolina) Halwa 

Ingredients

  • ½ cup of coconut oil or ghee
  • 1 cup of semolina flour
  • ½ teaspoon of cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon of cardamom
  • 1 cup of whole milk
  • 2 cups of filtered spring water
  • ½ cup of raisins
  • ¼ cup of sunflower seeds
  • ¼ cup of pumpkin seeds
  • ¼ cup of turbinado sugar

 

  1. In a saucepan boil the milk, water, sugar, cinnamon and cardamom together. Let simmer for 5 minutes.
  2. In the meantime, in a separate pan, sauté the flour in the oil until a deep golden color. Keep over medium/low heat.
  3. Add the boiled mixture to the sautéed semolina stirring frequently with care as there may be some sizzling and splashing.
  4. Add the raisins and the seeds and let cook for a further 5 mins. Spoon into a bowl and enjoy!

Sattva [pure] qualities of the mind are expressed mostly as love and compassion, righteousness, and often describes the kind of person who seeks after truth in life. Ayurvedic Home Remedies For A Dry Cough & Sore Throat

"Honey is a natural home remedy for a dry cough, as it soothes the irritated tissue lining at the back of the throat. Depending on the severity of the cough, you can take a tablespoon of honey one to three times a day."

Sore Throat + Common Cold
First and foremost, rest is the best remedy for the common cold. That said, make sure to get enough Vitamin C and there is no better source of Vitamin C than Amalaki. Amalaki is the indian gooseberry, the word “amla” means ‘sour’ and has a very high content of vitamin C.

Also consider taking 1 tablet or ½ tsp of neem at least 3x day.
After neem, mix about:
- 1/2 tsp sitopaladi
- 1 pinch pippali (or regular black pepper, if pippali not available)
- 1 tsp honey

Lick this mixture and avoid eating or drinking for at least ½ hr. You will notice a little bit of burning in your throat after you take this sitopaladi/pippali/honey mixture.

"Leaky Gut" - The Root Cause Of All Disease? + An Ayurvedic Perspective

 

"LEAKY GUT SYNDROME"
Although the phrase “leaky gut” was never well accepted in the medical community, research over the past two decades has revealed that gut health is critical to overall health, and an unhealthy gut contributes to a wide range of diseases including diabetes, obesity, rheumatoid arthritis, depression and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Ancient Wisdom Of Ayurveda ...
“Due to the purification of the body, the capacity of digestion and metabolism is enhanced, normal health is restored, all sense organs start working with vigor, old age is prevented and diseases cured.” - Charaka Samhita Ch. 16 Sutra 17-19

In Ayurvedic medicine, most treatable diseases arise from the presence of “ama”, a toxic by-product of poor digestion. Mirroring this ancient wisdom is the modern theory of ‘Intestinal Permeability’ [i.e. “leaky gut syndrome”]. Intestinal permeability is the inflammatory response in the digestive tract due to a combination of insults to the gut mucosal lining. As a result, persistent GI inflammation eventually disrupts the integrity of the mucosal lining of the gut and tiny perforations allows for molecules much larger than usual to pass through this defensive barrier. As toxic by-products of poor digestion pass through this now weakened defense barrier [i.e. impaired mucosal lining] this initiates an immune response which then allows for the formation of specific antibodies towards these very toxic elemental by-products of poor digestion.

By-product Of Poor Digestion - Toxic! 
“The signs and symptoms of ama are clogging of channels, sense of heaviness, low energy, restlessness, lethargy, indigestion, congestion/expectoration, accumulation of waste, loss of taste and sexual debility.” - Ashtanga Hridaya Su. 30.23

Unfortunately, the tissues which make up the body actually have antigenic sites which are nearly identical to those elemental by-products of poor digestion. After all, the body is made up from the products of digestion. As a result, when the intestinal barrier becomes permeable [i.e. leaky] then a large protein molecule [i.e. zonulin] enters into the blood and circulates throughout the body. Since these large proteins of poor digestion do not normally circulate throughout the body, the body mounts an immune response and attacks them. Studies reveal that this immune response may play an important role in the development of autoimmune diseases like Hashimoto’s, type 1 diabetes, among other health conditions. It is also important to note that you don’t necessarily have to have gut symptoms to have a leaky gut. For example, leaky gut can also manifest as skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis, even heart conditions and of course inflammatory joint conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.
